'Mrs Peterson,' the receptionist called, 'Dr Leigh will see you now. It's your first door on the right,' she said smiling. Laura followed her directions along the blue carpeted corridor and was soon knocking gently on the counsellor's door. Within seconds, a woman small in stature, with a neat modest figure, had opened it. Her dark hair parted down the middle and was rolled up neatly on both sides.

'Ahh, Mrs Peterson,' she said, firmly shaking her hand. Her voice was soft and gentle, instantly putting Laura at ease.

'Please, call me Laura,' she said.

'Laura it is then,' she said, totally attentive to her, 'Please, take a seat.' She said pointing to a brown and cream two-seater sofa. The women started with small talk about the journey down to London and about life living in Bournemouth.

'It must be wonderful being surrounded by so much natural beauty,' Dr Leigh said wistfully.

'Yes, yes it is, I feel very lucky.'

'Good. Now, back to the reason you are here today. I'll quickly run through the way I do things so you know what to expect from me. I offer two counselling sessions to begin with and I'm hoping that through these sessions you will build a strong foundation to grow from, for you to stand firmly... I cannot cure you, all I can do is guide you. Are you happy with this so far?'

'Yes,' Laura said.

'Good, the first session, which will take place today, will go through the sort of support you said you needed when you filled out the questionnaire in the waiting room.' Laura nodded. 'Were there any questions that you'd like to ask me about?'

'No,' said Laura.

'Okay, great,' Dr Leigh said, retrieving the questionnaire. 'So I see that you've ticked "letting go" as the main thing you would like to discuss today – if it's okay with you, can you fill me in on what brings you here that relates to letting go?'

'Well...' Laura started slowly, 'my husband left me out of the blue. There were no outward signs that things were going wrong, and I'm suffering because I can't get him out of my mind. I never thought in a million years that David would betray me...would ever stop loving me...and the more I think about him the worse I feel and I can't function. I need him to function – I feel as though we've let our children down.'

'The first thing we must explore is addiction,' Dr Leigh said.

'Oh, no, I don't have any addictions,' Laura said hurriedly, thinking perhaps Dr Leigh had misunderstood.

'What I want you to do is look at the list I've written on this pad,' she said handing it over to Laura, 'and read what is written as though the words were said by someone else.' Laura scanned the list.

'Do those words come across as someone who is withdrawing from an addiction, or someone who's had a healthy, balanced life?'

Laura's eyes stared at the array of words on the paper: need, can't live without, can't function, need him to function.
